Huddersfield Town are reportedly at the front of the queue to take Bristol City playmaker Sammie Szmodics on-loan in January, should the South West club look to offload him.

Szmodics arrived at Ashton Gate in the summer after seeing his previous deal at League Two side Colchester United expire.

The attacking midfielder was a key player for the U's, contributing 28 goals and 13 assists over the past two seasons.

He has been given very few opportunities to impress by Robins boss Lee Johnson in the 2019/20 campaign, making just three appearances in total.

It appears Szmodics may get those opportunities elsewhere in the second half of the season as the Bristol Post has reported that both Huddersfield and Hull City are keen on signing him on loan in January.

It is understood that Johnson is reluctant to let him leave the club but acknowledges he needs first-team opportunities to help him adapt to life in the Championship.

The report claims that Huddersfield are the more likely destination, due to the City boss' close relationship with the Cowley brothers and the fact that they're not a promotion rival.

Huddersfield's first win since early November helped them move four points clear of the relegation zone in midweek.

The Verdict

This looks like a move that could work well for all parties involved.

Szmodics looked a bright spark in pre-season but has struggled to make much of an impact since. He could really do with going somewhere that he is going to get a regular run of games at Championship level.

The Terriers need some added attacking impetus and energy, the 24-year-old playmaker provides exactly that and could be just what Danny Cowley needs to help his side stay well clear of the relegation scrap in the second part of the season.
