Huddersfield's busy January continued as they announced the signing of Richard Stearman last night.

The 32-year-old, who has signed an 18-month deal with the Terriers, arrives on a free transfer after he was released by Sheffield United which enabled him to complete a move across Yorkshire.

Stearman has proven himself at this level in the past, starring as Wolves won promotion to the top-flight back in 2009 and he featured in 16 games for the Blades last season as they secured a top two finish.

However, game time has been hard to come by this season, with the defender not playing for Chris Wilder's men.

So, this move will give him an opportunity to play and boss Danny Cowley told the official site that he was delighted to bring a player of this calibre, hours after a deal for Arsenal's Emile Smith-Rowe was confirmed.

"Richard brings experience and leadership qualities that will definitely add to our dressing room. He was a key component of creating an outstanding culture at Sheffield United and he’ll provide a fantastic example for our young professionals day in and day out.

"On the pitch, he’s positionally intelligent, physically robust and a great communicator."

The verdict

This seems like a great bit of business for the Terriers as they are getting a proven player in the Championship and Stearman also appears to be a good character to have around the place - something Cowley recognises.

There's no doubt the squad needed strengthening and bringing in the defender will improve the team and he will set a high standard.

It has been a good start to the window for Huddersfield, who will be looking to pick up a crucial three points at Barnsley this afternoon.
