Huddersfield Town midfielder Aaron Mooy has signed a new three-year deal at the John Smith's Stadium, the club confirmed on Thursday.

However, they also confirmed that the Australian would be leaving to join Brighton and Hove Albion on a season-long loan for the current campaign in a bizarre move.

Graham Potter had apparently made Mooy one of his top-targets upon his arrival at the Amex with reports on Wednesday night suggesting a deal was very likely to go through on deadline day.

But the Seagulls have had to settle for a loan deal, although it is likley that the Terriers fans will not be too pleased to lose their star man for the coming campaign.

Mooy initially joined Huddersfield on loan during the 2016/17 season, playing a key role in their promotion to the Premier League, before signing permanently a year later.

In total he made 65 appearances in the top flight, scoring seven goals and assisting four more, and was desperate to continue testing himself in the Premier League.

The verdict

This seems like such an incredibly bizarre deal.

Why not just cash in on him? By the sounds of it, if Huddersfield fail to win promotion back to the Premier League, Mooy will not exactly be eager to return.

So they will just end up selling him but for less than they would have received this summer. Deals have become more and more strange as the years have gone on but I really see no way this benefits Huddersfield more than just selling him would have.
