Josh Scowen left Queens Park Rangers to join Sunderland in January.

The 26-year-old had spent two-and-a-half seasons at QPR. He joined from Barnsley on a free in the summer of 2017, and little was expected of the little midfielder, but in all, he gave a good account of himself.

Scowen was one of many QPR players who'd been subject to online abuse, throughout this season and last, but he seemed to be hit more than most.

It'd become so bad that Scowen chose to delete his Twitter account, and in January, with his QPR contract set to end this summer, he moved to Sunderland for an undisclosed fee.

The large majority of QPR fans had supported Scowen through his spell in West London, and many had tipped him to become a really good player for Sunderland in League One.

But it's not happened for Scowen at the Stadium of Light so far - he's made just two substitute appearances, spending the rest of his time on the bench.

Sunderland under Phil Parkinson look set for a promotion challenge. After a contested first-half of the season, and an off-colour start to Parkinson's tenure, Sunderland are finally firing on all cylinders, and currently sit in 5th-place of the League One table - four points off the top-two.

The verdict

Scowen was a reliable, hard-working midfielder who'd always give his all, and always put his body on the line. But as so many players are, he was slated by a lot of QPR fans, and it's seemingly taken its toll on him.

Hopefully he'll become a more important player for the Black Cats. He's got clear potential and was expected to be an important player for them, but he's yet to make his mark on the team.
