Jose Gomes was sacked as Reading manager in October.

He was handed his first job in England with Reading in December 2018. He oversaw a 20th-place finish for the Royals in his first half-season in charge, ending only seven points off the drop.

But an impressive pre-season which saw George Puscas arrive from Inter Milan for a club record fee had Gomes set for a decent season in his first full one in charge, but he was shown the door after just two wins from the opening 11 games of the Championship season.

Mark Bowen, who previously held the role of sporting director, was offered the job and has since boosted Reading up to 15th in the table.

Little over a month after his sacking though, Gomes was appointed as manager of Maritimo.

The Portuguese Primeira Liga side were strewn in the bottom-half of the league and three months after appointing Gomes, they remain so - his first game in charge came at away at Benfica, which ended in a 4-0 loss, and he's won only three of his nine games since.

It's better than the 23.7% of games he won at Reading though, and his side claimed their biggest win under Gomes last time out beating Ferreira 3-0.

The verdict

Gomes and Reading just wasn't a good match. He's had good experiences as a manager and a coach, and at some of Europe's biggest clubs, but English football is a different game and not every manager can adapt.

The Royals are in a much better state now. Bowen has, against the odds, pulled Reading out of the relegation zone and has them playing much better football, and he's reinstated a lot more potential into this team.
