This summer transfer window certainly looks set to be an important one for Peterborough United.

Following their promotion from League One last season, Posh's return to the Championship did not go to plan, with the club suffering an immediate relegation back to the third-tier.

As a result, the club will now be looking for a strong summer in the market, to ensure they have a squad that is capable of challenging for a return to the second-tier during the 2022/23 campaign.

That is something that will come in the form of both retaining and moving on current members of the squad at London Road, as well as getting things right in terms of the players they bring, as the returning Grant McCann looks to put his mark on the squad in his first transfer window back at the club.

So with that in mind, we've taken a look at seven things Peterborough must do for an ideal summer transfer window, right here.

As clubs look to add some additional firepower to their ranks in the market, it would be no surprise to see Clarke-Harris attracting attention this summer.

A return of 12 goals from 41 Championship games for a team that suffered relegation is impressive, and that could see other teams tempted to take a chance on the 27-year-old.

But given how prolific he has been in League One in the past, Clarke-Harris will surely be key to their hopes of promotion next season, meaning Peterborough must stand firm in rejecting any offers that come in for their striker.

Another Peterborough player who is seems could be the subject of much speculation this summer, is Ronnie Edwards.

The 19-year-old has burst onto the scene at London Road this season in particular, and the centre back's form has seen him linked with a number of the Premier League's big clubs over the past few months.

That could put Peterborough under some pressure with regards to his future, but with so long remaining in his career to be an asset for the Posh, and three years remaining on his contract at London Road, meaning they are under no pressure to sell, the club must be ready to reject any offers that come in.

He may have only joined the club in the summer, but Oliver Norburn is another who could be the subject of talk about a potential move away from Peterborough in the next few months.

It was reported in January that Norburn was keen to leave the club to move north amid bids from Blackpool, who may be tempted to try their look again now they are a divison above Posh.

However, with Norburn a stand out player for Posh with his performances, and a key figure in the squad as club captain, it seems vital that this is another player whose future Peterborough must stand firm over if they are to challenge for promotion again next season.

There are already reports emerging of potential new targets for the summer transfer window, one of which has suggested that Ipswich are keen on signing midfielder Jack Taylor from Peterborough.

Taylor is another who showed promise for the Posh despite relegation last season, and with two years left on his contract at London Road, they are under no huge pressure to sell the 23-year-old right now.

Beyond that, Ipswich are a club who like Peterborough, will be targeting promotion from League One during the 2022/23 campaign, so it would make little sense for Posh to allow such a deal to happen, given it could strengthen a direct rival.

One position that it will be essential for Peterborough to strengthen in during the market, is between their own goalposts.

With Christy Pym transfer listed, Dai Cornell released and Steven Benda's loan from Swansea now over, the Posh are badly short on goalkeeping options heading into the window.

As a result, at least one new goalkeeper will have to be on the agenda for the club, with 20-year-old Will Blackmore the only 'keeper currently on their books, and that is obviously not going to be enough to get them through a full season.

Another area of the pitch that feels as though it will need addressing for Peterborough over the course of the next few months, is the left hand side of their defence.

Hayden Coulson's loan spell from Middlesbrough has now come to an end, meaning that Dan Butler - who has yet to play in the calendar year due to an ankle ligament injury - is now the only senior natural left-back still on the books at Portman Road.

As a result, it feels that some cover and competition in that position has to be among the priorities for Posh this summer, to ensure they do not go into the new campaign exposed down that side of the park.

If Peterborough are to add the players they want to their squad this summer, then it seems they will have to move on some of the ones currently on their books.

With just three players released by the club, others will need to be sold to create space and raise funds for new recruits, with the aforementioned Pym joined by Mark Beevers, Idris Kanu, Ryan Broom and Jorge Grant on Peterborough's transer list.

While those players may not be easy to find buyers for after some underwhelming seasons, that could be vital to the Posh's hopes of adding to their squad as much as they want, meaning moving those individuals on will be an important part of their summer business.
