Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolverhampton Wanderers are looking certainties for promotion in the Sky Bet Championship this season, with the Molineux outfit looking like an unstoppable force heading into December.

Last night, Wolves recorded a 1-0 victory over Birmingham City at St Andrew’s, restoring a four-point lead at the top of the Championship table, but more importantly creating a 10-point gap to third.

Leo Bonatini’s 12th goal of the season secured all three points for Wolves, who look a shadow of the side who failed to mount any sort of assault on the top-six last season.

Wolves have significantly improved defensively this season, with last night’s clean sheet their fourth in six fixtures and 14th across all competitions.

Last season, Wolves managed just 14 clean sheets over 52 fixtures, but have this year matched that tally after just 24 fixtures, as revealed by Championship stat guru, Goodbrand Stats (@StatsChristian).

Impressively, Wolves have been the only side in Europe to stop Manchester City scoring a goal in a competitive fixture this season, with Nuno’s side holding Pep Guardiola’s side to a 0-0 draw in the Carabao Cup, before losing on penalties.

The Verdict

Wolves have been sensational in attack this season, but this stat will delight the club’s supporters, with every promotion-winning side built on the foundation of a solid defence.

Nuno’s trusted 3-4-3 formation offers plenty of defensive cover, and Wolves’ record is exceptional so far this season.

If they can continue to match their fine attacking effort and maintain their magnificent defensive contribution, this Wolves side could go far.
