How is Phillip Cocu getting on ever since leaving Derby County?

Published

on

If Derby County had brought in the playing version of Phillip Cocu then it would have been seen as a real coup for the Rams, but in 2019 they acquired the manager who had something to prove after disappointing at Turkish giants Fenerbahce.

Cocu was relatively successful before that at PSV, winning three Eredivisie titles with a club that he was also at as a player, but he jumped ship for a new challenge in the summer of 2018 in Turkey and lasted just a few months.

After being out of work for nine months, Cocu was handed the reins at Pride Park in 2019 and despite finishing in 10th position in his debut campaign, the majority of supporters were a fan of ‘Cocuball’ and the following campaign looked set to be a promising one – but it was a bit of a disaster.

Quiz: Have any of these 30 ex-Derby County players ever played abroad?

11 games into the campaign and the Rams had won just once, and losing seven times saw the end of Cocu’s time at County with the club sitting at the foot of the Championship table – even below Sheffield Wednesday who had points deducted.

Wayne Rooney replaced Cocu in the dugout eventually on a permanent basis but what has he been up to since departing the club?

He hasn’t found a new job just yet and he hasn’t been linked with the current vacancies at the likes of Cardiff City and Barnsley, which suggests that his next role won’t be in the UK.

Cocu recently revealed that he would be open to returning to Holland in the Eredivisie – a league he won three times as a coach with PSV – so that is where we could next see the ex-Derby man.
