Mike van Der Hoorn has been playing exclusively top-flight football since leaving Swansea City in September 2020.

After making 125 appearances for the Swans in four years the Dutch centre back joined Bundesliga side Arminia Bielefeld.

2020/21 was Bielefeld's first season since promotion to the German top-flight and van Der Hoorn played a bit part role in them narrowly surviving the drop. Despite signing a three year deal with the club after leaving South Wales van Der Hoorn has left to rejoin Utrecht in the Eredivisie.

The 29-year-old signed an initial season-long loan deal at Utrecht this summer, but the Dutch club have an obligation to buy him permanently at the end of the season. So it looks like van Der Hoorn's time in the Bundesliga was a brief but successful stint.

The former Netherlands U21 international made his first steps in senior football with Utrecht back in the 2010/11 season so there is a certain romance to him approaching his peak as a central defender back where it all began.

Mike van Der Hoorn probably did not live up to his billing in England, arriving at the Swansea.com Stadium for £2.25 million, according to Transfermarkt, from Dutch giants Ajax, but he has returned to the Netherlands this season a more well-rounded defender with Utrecht occupying fourth spot providing a realistic chance of finishing in a European place.
