Marcus Maddison endured a very difficult time of it during his spell with Charlton Athletic last season and he is now back playing away from the limelight and pressure of professional football.

The 28-year-old arrived at the Valley in October 2020 a few months after he had been released by Peterborough United at the end of the 2019/20 campaign.

That came after Maddison had spent time out on loan with Hull City during the second half of that season with him scoring one goal in seven league appearances for the Tigers.

The attacker managed to score his first goal for Charlton during an EFL Trophy fixture against Leyton Orient a month after he made the move to the Addicks.

While he was also able to add one more goal to his tally in the league which came during a 2-2 draw against Plymouth Argyle in December.

However, Maddison would go on to make only one more League One appearance for Charlton with the 28-year-old featuring in the Addicks’ 2-0 defeat at home to Accrington Stanley back in January.

After that, Maddison was sent out on loan to Bolton Wanderers in the winter window and he managed to make ten appearances for the Trotters in League Two to help them sustain their challenge for promotion. However, his loan deal was cut short in April and he revealed that he was considering quitting professional football.

Maddison returned to Charlton during the summer, but the Addicks made the decision not to offer the 28-year-old a new deal and he, therefore, left Charlton in search of a fresh start.

Following Maddison’s exit from Charlton in the summer, he decided to sign for Spalding United in the Northern Premier League Division One Midlands division.

That came with him reuniting with his former Peterborough united team-mate Gabriel Zakuani who is currently the manager at Spalding United.

The attacker has so far managed to score twice in his five appearances in all competitions for Spalding United as he adjusts to life away from the pressures of professional football.

The 28-year-old appears to be enjoying his time with Spalding United with him posting on his personal Instagram account to celebrate some of his new side's performances so far this season and hailing the impact of local non-league football.
