Jose Morais' Barnsley tenure is one that can be filed in the 'disappointing' category.

As assistant to Jose Mourinho, the 56-year-old had contributed to domestic and European success in the dugout at Porto, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, and Chelsea, while he had plenty of experience standing on his own two feet elsewhere.

But his time at Oakwell was brief and notable for all the wrong reasons. Morais arrived in February 2018 and lasted only three months before being sacked after the Tykes' relegation to League One – having won just three of his 15 games at the helm.

A brief spell at Karpaty Lviv in Ukraine followed, lasting only 14 games and little more than two months, before he quit to take charge of South Korean top flight club Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors.

That would prove to be a fruitful move for both Morais and Jeonbuk as they won the K-League title in his first year at the helm before following it up with the first domestic league and cup double in the club's history in 2019/20.

All good things must come to an end, however, and the Portuguese coach decided not to renew his contract meaning he departed in December 2020.

Morais returned to coaching in May this year when he replaced Rogerio Micale at Al-Hilal Riyadh for the final games of the 2021/22 season, helping the club win the Saudi Arabian title.

He is now a free agent once again but you feel a second crack at the Barnsley job is unlikely despite the sacking of Markus Schopp earlier this month.
