Joe Bennett signed for Wigan Athletic on a two year deal this summer following his release from Cardiff City.
The experienced left back is yet to feature in a matchday squad this season due to injury, but should be ready to contribute further down the line when Wigan’s automatic promotion push reaches crunch time.
Tendayi Darikwa is currently skippering the club as an out of position left back. The 29-year-old is a specialist right back but is filling in on the other side due to a lack of credible options for Leam Richardson.
Max Power is often dropping back to right back with the Latics producing a very effective side despite the shortcomings. When Bennett returns Darikwa will likely move to the other side for him to get up to speed at left back with Power providing an additional midfield option.
With 264 appearances at Championship level, Bennett will definitely have the experience and knowledge to contribute off the pitch.
That could also come in handy if Wigan achieve their automatic promotion aspirations this term but for now in acting as a role model and setting the standards on the training ground.
Quiz: Did these 25 Cardiff City transfers actually happen?
In conclusion, we are yet to see whether Wigan is a good fit for Joe Bennett but hopefully before the season is out he will be able to show the Latics’ supporters what he is about.
There was an update on his injury situation on Wigan Today last week, a return does not seem too far away.
