Graham Carey has recently recovered from a knee injury to get back amongst the goals for St Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership.

The Saints are currently sixth, just inside what will become the top group when the league splits in half, but with St Mirren just behind them in seventh on goal difference with a game in hand.

Carey signed a two-year deal at McDiarmid Park after returning from his Bulgarian adventure with CSKA Sofia.

The 33-year-old's four goals in all competitions so far this season ranks him joint-top scorer alongside former Sheffield Wednesday striker Stevie May and summer signing Nicky Clark.

After missing the best part of two months with a knee injury, Carey's importance to the team can be seen by the fact that he came straight into the starting XI, where he has stayed for the last four matches, rather than being bedded in once again.

Two of Carey's three league goals this season have been precision penalties, but his first typified the class in his wand of a left foot.

Carey picked up a poor goalkeeper clearance against Heart of Midlothian, taking one touch to expertly control the ball before converting the opportunity to strike with the outside of his foot into the empty net from outside the area, with the Hearts glovesman frantically scampering back to cover his goal.

Stepping up to spot kick responsibilities in his first season at the club goes some way to showing the trust that he has gained since arriving and the faith that Callum Davidson has in his ability.

The ex-Plymouth Argyle forward will be 35 when his deal runs out at St Johnstone, potentially suggesting that he has one more move left in him.

EFL recruitment has got younger on the whole since the coronavirus pandemic, but a player of his quality would be hard to turn down for a League Two club, should he become available at that juncture.
