When Joao Carvalho arrived at Nottingham Forest back in 2018, much of the hype was rightfully surrounding him.

The playmaker joined Forest for a club-record fee of £13.2million from Benfica, and also arriving from the Portuguese side was Diogo Goncalves.

Goncalves - who arrived on a season-long loan deal - was pictured alongside Carvalho and Nicholas Randall in one of the executive lounges at the City Ground, with fans left exciting by the winger's potential, as well as their new record arrival's presence.

Goncalves started in the opening day draw with Bristol City in August, a day which saw Carvalho also make his debut as Daryl Murphy netted for the Reds.

That was to be the winger's only league start for the club, though. He made six further substitute appearances in the Championship for Forest, but did manage to start three times in the Carabao Cup.

Fans were crying out for Goncalves to be given a chance in the first-team, but despite an impressive display against Stoke City in the League Cup, his night was tarnished by a late red card.

In total, Goncalves made 10 appearances in all competitions for Forest, failing to score a goal or register a single assist during his spell on Trentside.

He returned to parent club Benfica at the end of the season, but what is he up to now?

Well, after spending last season on loan at Famalicao - scoring seven goals and registering 10 assists in 34 games - Goncalves is in and around the first-team squad at Benfica.

He's made 13 appearances in all competitions this season, featuring seven times in the Liga NOS but failing to make a league start.

The winger will be keen to get more starts under his belt between now and the end of the season - a very similar case to that of when he was at Forest.
