Birmingham City's decision to bring in Neil Etheridge this summer was a very welcome one among the support as they now finally have a quality number one at this level.

Whilst Lee Camp had decent moments over the years, he was far too inconsistent, which is why he lost his place on occasions.

Academy graduate Connal Trueman benefited from that but it was clear this summer that the 24-year-old wouldn't get the regular football he needs at St. Andrew's to continue his development, so a loan move to Wimbledon was finalised.

And, it's fair to say it has gone very well for the stopper with the League One club so far, apart from his debut, which was a remarkable 4-4 draw with Plymouth.

Since then, Trueman has conceded just five goals in seven games and whilst he has been protected well by the defence, he has been a reassuring presence at the back for the team.

He has managed two clean sheets in that period, including a shutout as Wimbledon beat Blackpool earlier this week.

Given their resources, many expected Glyn Hodges' men to have a tough season but the early signs are positive as they are 11th in the table and have a good base to build on moving forward.

Trueman has been key to that and he is sure to be crucial as the campaign progresses.

Whether he does enough to suggest he can challenge Etheridge at Birmingham remains to be seen but he still has his best years in front of him and he certainly has talent.
