Born in Glasgow, Charlie Mulgrew progressed through the ranks at Celtic, before signing his first professional contract in 2002.

The defender came through Celtic's academy system at the same time as Aiden McGeady, and originally operated as a centre-back before switching to left-back.

Mulgrew was part of the Celtic team that won the Scottish FA Youth Cup during the 2004/05 campaign, with The Bhoys securing a 2-0 victory over St Mirren at Hampden Park.

The defender then spent the second half of the 2005/06 campaign to fellow Scottish Premiership club Dundee United, with Mulgrew going on to make 13 first-team appearances, returning to Celtic at the end of the campaign.

Proceeding to make a move to the English Championship, Mulgrew departed his hometown club and was unable to make a first-team appearance at Celtic Park.

Wolves became his new permanent home in 2006, but in two years in England's second tier, he was confined to just six appearances and a short loan spell with Southend United in the division below.

The 2008/09 campaign emerged as Mulgrew's breakthrough season, with the defender featuring 35 times in his return to Scotland with Aberdeen, going on to make a further 37 appearances the season after.

Mulgrew reunited with his hometown club ahead of the 2010/11 season, and over 200 appearances later, it is fair to say that the versatile defender enjoyed a lot of success back in Glasgow.

When those six years came to an end, another opportunity in the Championship arose, with Blackburn Rovers the next destination.

Playing 28 times in his first season in Lancashire, Rovers were relegated to League One, with Mulgrew then emerging integral to the club's promotion the following campaign.

After five years with Blackburn, and loan spells with Wigan Athletic and Fleetwood Town, Mulgrew returned to Scotland ahead of the 2021/22 season, joining Dundee United, the side who gave him his first opportunity of first-team football.

Being solely deployed as a centre-back, and wearing the captain's armband in the majority of fixtures thus far, Mulgrew has been impressive this season.

The Tangerines have picked up 13 points from their last five league games and currently sit in third place.

Mulgrew's side are just three points off the division's summit, with the centre-back contributing with a goal, an assist and six clean sheets.
