In truth, Charlie Mulgrew's departure from Blackburn Rovers was set in motion long before his exit from Ewood Park was officially announced.

After joining Wigan Athletic on loan on the final day of the 2019 summer transfer window, Mulgrew would make just one more appearance for Rovers, in a 2-0 defeat at Barnsley in June 2020.

The centre back then spent an injury hit 2020/21 campaign on loan with Fleetwood Town, before his permanent departure from Blackburn was confirmed at the end of that season, when his contract at Ewood Park expired.

Following his departure from Ewood Park, Blackburn's 2017/18 League One promotion winning captain headed back north of the border to his native Scotland, to join Dundee United.

Mulgrew, who previously played for the Terras during a loan spell in 2006, signed a two-year deal with the club, securing his future at Tannadice Park until the end of the 2022/23 season.

Things certainly started well for Mulgrew back at Dundee United, in a way Rovers fans themselves will be far from unfamiliar with, the former Scotland international netting a stunning free kick in a League Cup win over Arbroath back in June.

Indeed, Mulgrew has gone on to establish himself as a regular in Dundee United's side since his return to Tannadice, starting all but one of the club's 15 league games so far. His only goal in the league was also an important one, acrobatically firing in the winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Motherwell.

With Mulgrew now playing regularly, and impressing, and Dundee United themselves performing well - they sit fourth in the Scottish top-flight standings - it does seem as though things have worked out rather well for the former Rovers man, since he brought a frustrating final couple of years at Ewood Park to a decisive end.
