Aaron Mooy burst onto the scene at Huddersfield Town in the 2016-2017 season, winning the club’s player of the year award and playing a pivotal role in Town’s promotion to the Premier League.

The Australian immediately became a fan favourite at the John Smith’s Stadium and his commanding midfield performances during the 2016-2017 season certainly played their part in helping Town to a shock promotion.

Mooy initially joined the Terriers on-loan from Manchester City in the summer of 2016, but the move was made permanent after the club’s promotion to the Premier League.

The former St. Mirren man went on to make 65 Premier League appearances, scoring seven goals for the club including one in the famous 2-1 victory against Manchester United.

This season, Mooy played the whole 90 minutes of Huddersfield’s opening day defeat to Derby County in August, but days later joined Brighton and Hove Albion on loan for the remainder of the season.

Mooy’s contract was due to expire at the end of this term but he signed a three-year contract extension and in doing so joined Albion to fulfil “his wish” of playing in the Premier League.

So far this term, Mooy has featured six times for Graham Potter’s side, with four starts and two substitute appearances to his name.

His standout performance so far for the Seagulls was in the 3-0 thrashing of Tottenham Hotspur in September, where similar to his Huddersfield days he helped his side dictate the midfield, making Spurs look woeful.

Two weeks later however, Mooy was booked twice in the space of five first half minutes and received his marching orders against Aston Villa.

In a game Brighton were leading, the Australian gave away two clumsy fouls and the Seagulls ended up falling to a late 2-1 defeat.

Since the red card, Mooy has featured on the bench in Brighton’s last two games but has yet to play another minute.

Graham Potter could look to ring the changes following the international break during which, Mooy has linked up with the Australian national side.

It will certainly be interesting to see what Mooy does at the end of this season.

In some ways it could be a win-win for Town; the player is now contracted until 2022 and will arrive back at the John Smith’s Stadium with another year of Premier League experience under his belt.

Should the 29-year-old opt to leave, the Terriers will be in a position to command a higher transfer fee than they could of this summer.

If he were to stay, with Town in the Championship, they would find themselves with an experienced midfield stalwart who knows exactly how to take the Terriers back to the Premier League.
