Things might not be going to plan for Middlesbrough this season, and a trip down memory lane hasn’t really helped supporters.
Teesside Live writer Anthony Vickers posted on social media that today is the sixth anniversary of Aitor Karanka’s appointment as Middlesbrough manager.
The Spaniard arrived after being number two to Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid, and was responsible for one of the most exciting times in recent years at the Riverside.
After consolidating the Teessiders’ place in the Championship, he built toward promotion from the Championship – something which he achieved in his third season in charge.
Would you welcome Aitor Karanka back as Middlesbrough manager?
Karanka looked to have found an effective formula in the Premier League as well, but as the season unfolded the wheels seemed to come off somewhat at the Riverside, leading the Spaniard to leave his post and Middlesbrough to leave their top flight hopes behind.
Despite the way his spell in charge ended, Aitor Karanka remains a largely popular figure around Teesside for the work that he did, and news of his anniversary has left fans feeling nostalgic.
Here’s what some supporters had to say on social media.
Oh how I yearn for a return to those days #utb

It’s fair to say that on the whole, despite the manner of his departure and infamous walkout, Karanka was an overall success.
His impact is still felt now, with many reminiscing over memorable moments such as the cup runs, the 14/15 season and promotion the season after. #boro

You’ve been gone nearly as long as you were here @Karanka – how did that happen 😭

Don't know why but at the time felt so optimistic about this appointment, remember speaking to quite a few people about it on the day and everyone was buzzing
