Leeds United’s academy is famed, with the graduation of top talent an expectation, rather than a hope, around the Yorkshire city.

A host of talent has made its way through to the first team, with one of the many being Doncaster born Alex Mowatt, who joined the academy at just nine-years-old.

In the first team Mowatt excelled, earning the Young Player of the Season award in his debut campaign, and finishing third in the Fans Player of the Season vote, a fantastic achievement for a recent academy graduate.

Mowatt went on to make 116 league appearances for the Whites until January of this year, when he was sold on a permanent deal to Yorkshire rivals, Barnsley.

A shock sale to some, big things were expected of Mowatt at Oakwell, but fast forward eight months, and the player is now in League One.

Mowatt joined Oxford on a season-long loan deal, dropping down into the third tier after failing to force his way into Paul Heckingbottom’s plans.

Now at the U’s under Pep Clotet, Mowatt has a lot to prove.

Still only 22, the player is young enough to reach the potential he showed as a teenager at Leeds, and Clotet has worked wonders to bring such a talented player to the Kassam Stadium this summer.

Barnsley have made a magnitude of signings since the window opened in June, and Mowatt simply fell down the pecking order.

There is no doubt that Mowatt will have a wonderful season in the third tier, simply because he is too good to play at the level, and he has a serious point to prove to those that have doubted him in the past.

The player will become a star of the Championship in the next few years, but his time in League One will be a real test of his mental character.

What has happened to Mowatt, Leeds and Barnsley fans? Can he still succeed at Championship level?
