Sam Byram was a real favourite at Leeds United and gave the club some hope at a time when there wasn’t much going the way of the Whites.

Leeds were about to embark on their first full season under the management of Neil Warnock when Byram debuted, and whilst he had the track record to suggest he could be a success at Elland Road, the glove never really fit, not like the club and Marcelo Bielsa.

The right-back debuted in a 4-0 win over Shrewsbury Town in the League Cup, before making his Championship debut the week after.

In three-and-a-half years with Leeds, Byram played under seven different managers and, as mentioned, was a glimmer of hope at a time when the club was going nowhere in the Championship.

143 appearances came and 10 goals, but eventually, in January 2016, Byram was on his way out of Elland Road and heading for the Premier League.

West Ham United was his destination, but things never really worked out for the young defender in London.

27 Premier League appearances were made, along with nine others in cup competitions, but Byram was never the forward-thinking full-back we saw at Elland Road and others were always ahead of him in the pecking order.

That allowed him to move to Nottingham Forest on loan last season, but injuries plagued Byram and he managed only six Championship appearances for the Reds, missing both games against his boyhood club.

Failure to shine at Forest paved the way for a permanent West Ham exit, though, and now Byram is at Carrow Road with Norwich City, still in the Premier League.

He’s played five times so far this season and is looking to get back to his best under a progressive manager in Daniel Farke.

Now 26, Byram’s career seems like it has gone by in a flash, but when you think about it, his Leeds debut feels a lifetime ago.

That might well be down to how far Leeds have come; Byram’s league debut against Wolves was played in-front of 23,745, way short of the 35,284 that packed in Elland Road to watch Bielsa’s side beat QPR on Saturday.

It’s a shame Byram never had the chance to play in this Leeds United side, as he would’ve done well. But there’s little doubt the full-back is focusing on that, as he continues to try and make his Premier League career a success.
