The rivalry between Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday is one of the fiercest in English football.

Although the two clubs have not met in the league now for almost four years, the animosity between the clubs is still as strong as ever.

However, the previous meetings between the pair have been short on entertainment. Since the Blades' secured a 4-2 win at Hillsborough back in September 2017, the following three games all ended 0-0.

It has been a mixed few years for both, with the Blades suffering relegation from the Premier League and the Owls dropping down to League One.

But their fortunes are improving, with both clubs currently sitting second in their respective divisions and looking on course for promotion, although that will mean another season without a Steel City Derby should they both achieve their ambitions.

We took a look at how the attendances of the two clubs compare this campaign.

Sheffield United

Bramall Lane has a capacity of 32,050 and Blades fans have come close to filling this on a number of occasions so far this season.

They have the second highest average attendance in the league with an impressive 28,788, which is perhaps unsurprising when you consider the form Paul Heckingbottom's men have been in for much of the campaign.

The highest attendance this season came in November's 1-0 defeat to Rotherham United, which was witnessed by 30,700 people, with an increased amount of away fans likely to have made the short trip across South Yorkshire.

Their lowest gate this season was 26,363 for the 1-0 defeat to Queens Park Rangers in October, but that is still higher than the average of 22 other Championship teams.

As the Blades continue their march towards the Premier League, we can probably expect to see more games reach close to a sell-out as the season progresses.

Sheffield Wednesday

Hillsborough is a much bigger stadium with Bramall Lane with a capacity of 39,732.

Wednesday's average attendance this season is 24,001, which is the third highest in League One behind Ipswich Town and Derby County.

Their highest attendance this campaign was 27,939 for the 2-0 defeat to Barnsley in the South Yorkshire derby in September.

The Owls fans have shown they will get behind their team on the big occasions by turning up in their numbers, as shown in the play-off semi-final against Sunderland last season and if their promotion push continues, they will likely do so one again in the latter part of the campaign.
