After securing a seventh-place finish last season, Charlton Athletic would have been hoping to launch a push for promotion during the current campaign.

However, following a woeful start to the term, the Addicks unsurprisingly opted to part ways with Nigel Adkins in October.

Since handing over the reins to Johnnie Jackson on a permanent basis, Charlton have only managed to show glimpses of promise in League One.

Currently on course to secure a mid-table finish, it will be intriguing to see whether the Addicks can end the season on a positive note by defeating Ipswich Town this weekend.

Ahead of this fixture, we have decided to take a look at how Charlton's average home attendance this season compares to recent seasons...

According to statistics gathered from Transfermarkt, Charlton have averaged an attendance of 15,102 at The Valley this season.

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the Addicks only had fans at three of their home games last season and thus the data gathered from this term is unrepresentative.

Covid-19 also impacted the figures produced in the 2019/20 campaign as the last nine matches were played behind closed doors.

In the home games that Charlton fans were allowed to watch, they actually averaged a smaller home attendance (14,884) compared to the current campaign despite the fact that they were participating in the Championship.

During their three season stay in the third-tier between 2016 and 2019, the Addicks recorded average attendances of 11,827, 11,846 and 11,162.

The last time that the club exceeded the attendance figures that they have illustrated this season was during the 2015/16 season where 15,632 fans came to watch them in each home fixture.

The highest average attendance at The Valley since the turn of the century was unsurprisingly recorded during the club's time in the Premier League.

In the 2004/05 campaign, Charlton averaged 26,701 in their home league fixtures as they secured a respectable 11th place finish in the top-flight.

The Addicks managed to produce some impressive performances under the guidance of Alan Curbishley as they beat the likes of Everton and Tottenham Hotspur in front of their own supporters.
