Derby County got back to winning ways with an excellent 1-0 away win against Preston North End this afternoon, sending themselves back up to fifth and now firmly in contention to seal a top six spot in the Championship.

The Rams had midfielder Tom Lawrence to thank for the win, as the former Ipswich midfielder slammed home a free kick to send the away end at Deepdale into raptures, and give manager Gary Rowett a much needed three points after a miserable run of form.

One of the key men this season and a player who came off the bench today is striker David Nugent, who spoke to the Rams official website after the game and admitted it was a 'horrible game to be involved in'.

Nugent though, praised his team for grinding out the win, and is hopeful they can use this win as a springboard to more success in the run in.

"Once we took the lead today it felt to me like the old Derby was coming back. We were under a bit of pressure near the end but we showed that fight and determination to see it out.” said Nugent.

Nugent also reserved special praise for goalscorer Lawrence, admitting he was 'pleased' for the midfielder to get the winner.

"He works on his free-kicks and stuff like that in training and he hit that one really well today. It dipped just in front of the goalkeeper and although he got a touch it was so pleasing to see it hit the net."
