Sunderland beat Wigan 2-0 at the DW Stadium yesterday to confirm their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup but Niall Huggins’ injury late on has proved cause for concern among the Black Cats fanbase.
The young defender impressed against the Latics and set up Luke O’Nien’s goal, which put the North East club 2-0 up, but was forced off due to an injury in the 79th minute.
Before his early exit, the 20-year-old, who signed from Leeds United in the summer, turned heads with his performance at right-back.

Niall Huggins is a talent. Every time he got on the ball his first instict was progression. Loves a dribble and left his fellow fullback for dead on a number of occasions. Hopefully the injury wasn't too bad. #SAFC

Few of the lads yet to really feature this season laying a marker down as we hoped tonight. Great win and into the hat. All rosy in the garden at the min on Wearside. Hopefully Huggins was just a precaution. #safc
