According to The Athletic, Watford have approached Barnsley boss Gerhard Struber over the vacant head coach role at Vicarage Road.

Struber has been a breath of fresh air for Barnsley since taking over from Daniel Stendel in November, adapting to life in the Championship and English football really well.

The 43-year-old has won 12 out of 32 games in charge of the Tykes, and guided the club to safety despite their hopes of survival looking dead and buried before the season's resumption.

Victories over Nottingham Forest and Barnsley in the final two games of the season saw them stay up by the skin of their teeth, and Barnsley fans will now be hoping for a bright future under the Austrian.

But according to The Athletic, though, Struber has now emerged as a contender to replace Nigel Pearson at Vicarage Road, as Watford prepare for life back in the Sky Bet Championship.

Watford have reportedly approached both Struber and Vladimir Ivic over the vacant head coach role, as the Hornets plot a swift return to the Premier League.

Struber has established himself as an exciting, up and coming coach during his brief tenure at Oakwell, and a move to Watford could be an appealing one for the 43-year-old.

Barnsley coaches Max Senft and Matt Rose are leaving Oakwell, though, amid speculation linking Struber with a move to Vicarage Road.
