Birmingham City have suffered one of the most free-falling couple of months in their history and the pressure on under-fire manager Gianfranco Zola is becoming unbearable.
Ahead of a tough-looking run of fixtures, the Blues are slowly making their way closer and closer towards the Championship trapdoor and there is seemingly nothing that can help them.
When Gianfranco Zola was appointed, he promised fresh, attractive football. What we’ve seen is under-par performances and an inability to get results like we haven’t seen in years.
And whilst the club continues to snowball closer and closer towards the relegation zone, there has been one bright spark amongst a squad of players who are under-performing horrendously.
The man in question? Cheick Keita, who has showed more the last few weeks that all of his team-mates.
The man signed from Virtus Entella in January must represent the best piece of work Gianfranco Zola has done since arriving at the club.
Keita, born in Paris, has won the hearts of Birmingham City fans for performances full of pace, skill and a real want to improve.
Whilst there is improvements to be made, especially to the defensive side of his game (should he even continue to play at left-back), he’s shown in a handful of games that he’s ready to shine for Birmingham City in years to come.
Many Blues fans will be hoping a healthy clause has been inserted into his contract because sooner rather than later, opponents will be sniffing around the youngster, who has fantastic potential.
It’s great to see one bright light at the end of a very dark tunnel down at St Andrews. For lots of supporters, discoveries like Keita is what’s keeping them down at games right now.
We’ve seen the likes of Redmond and Gray go onto bigger and better things after emerging as raw, baby-faced youngsters and you can very much envision the same happening with Keita.
He’s keeping plenty of fans going at the moment which in a time of crisis, is massively important to everyone.
