Football League World's Bristol City fan pundit Ian Gay has provided his verdict on Callum O'Dowda's start to the campaign, with the 24-year-old having been utilised in several positions by Lee Johnson this term.

The winger has been used as a central midfielder in more recent times for the Robins, with Johnson deploying him in a midfield three in their recent 1-0 victory away at Cardiff in the Severnside derby.

The former Oxford United man has maintained a good level of form despite being moved around regularly by his manger, appearing 12 times in the Championship so far.

We caught up with Gay earlier this week to ask our fan pundit about O'Dowda's versatile performances this season, and here is what he had to say on the matter:

"Callum’s natural position is left wing albeit he can play on the right.

"That being said we rarely play with one winger never mind two although we have at least four in the squad.

"The move to central midfield is a fairly new innovation that has been born as much out of necessity due to long-term injuries to Korey Smith and Jay Dasilva, meaning left sided midfielder Tommy Rowe has moved to left wing back.

"His work rate is excellent, whilst he also brings a good left foot, dribbling ability, and the ability to whip in a cross to a position that allows him to drift into wide areas."

However despite heaping praise on the Irishman's performances in the centre of the park, Gay was quick to state where he saw O'Dowda's long-term position in the side:

"I think he'll finish up playing on the left wing, however I do believe he can also play on the left of a narrow midfield three in a 3-5-2 formation."

Given his show of versatility and consistent level of form, it is fair to say that O'Dowda is one of Bristol City's unsung heroes this term, with Johnson clearly viewing him as one of the first names on the Robins team sheet.
