When Nottingham Forest announced Mustapha Carayol had signed for them in August 2016, much of the focus was on a player who had recently left the club.

The former Lincoln City winger left Middlesbrough to join up with the Reds, taking the number 35 shirt in the process. It was that shirt, over and above everything, that caused the issues for Forest fans.

Number 35 had previously been worn by Ollie Burke, the exciting winger they allowed to join RB Leipzig just three days previous. The fans were not happy that their prodigal son had been allowed to move to Germany and the capture of a free agent released by Boro hardly got their pulses racing.

Few were assessing Carayol's strengths and weaknesses, nor discussing how he might fit into the team. Most just wanted to know who else their £13m was going to be spent on.

Carayol played 21 times for Forest in his first season, scoring just once. In total he played 38 times, starting just 15 matches in the Championship. He scored three goals, two in the league and one in the EFL Cup.

It seems Forest fans were quite right to focus on the player who had left them, not the unfortunate one who got the weight of his shirt on his back.
