Football League World's Reading fan pundit Harry Chafer says he would like to see Chris Hughton takeover at the Madejski Stadium if rumours of Jose Gomes' sacking materialise.

Courtney Friday of the Reading Chronicle reported on Monday night that the Royals were on the verge of sacking the Portuguese and, although Chafer does not want it to happen, he says the former Brighton and Norwich boss would top his list of replacements.

"The name Chris Hughton was thrown around a lot when the news broke that Gomes might be on his way out last night," the regular punter told Football League World.

"And his record in the Championship does speak for itself - he is a very good manager at this level. So, if I had to be pushed to give a name I would say Hughton.

"But, does Hughton's style of play actually fit the players that the owners splashed so heavily on in the summer? Would hiring Hughton at this point actually have a positive impact on the squad?

"These are all questions that the answers remain to be seen. Hughton liked a 4-4-2 during his time at Brighton and I don't think the players we have would suit that system at all - especially as we have very few out and out wingers."

Hughton has been out of work since losing his job at Brighton and Hove Albion at the end of last season but appears to be in no rush to take any available job.

With 11 matches played this season, the Royals sit inside the relegation zone in 22nd place, with no wins in their last siz league matches and just two all season.

Gomes took over from Paul Clement in December 2018 and guided the club to safety in what was an intense relegation scrap at times, with the powers that be backing him heavily in the summer transfer window.

Large sums were splashed on attacking duo George Puscas and Lucas Joao with Michael Morrison, Charlie Adam, Matt Miazga and Ovie Ejaria all among those to arrive as well.
