Chris Wilder will be looking to assemble a squad that is ready to try and secure Championship promotion at Middlesbrough next season.

The Boro boss helped restore a feel-good factor around the club, arriving in early November to succeed Neil Warnock.

One player that the Teesside club are casting their eyes over at present, in an attempt to bolster competition levels within the squad is Huddersfield Town's Jordan Rhodes.

Spending a year with Boro back in 2016, and into early 2017, the experienced forward netted six times in 24 outings in Middlesbrough colours.

Delivering her verdict as to whether Boro should try their luck in pursuit of Rhodes, FLW's Middlesbrough fan pundit Dana Malt said: "It is an interesting link because, of course, Jordan Rhodes has been at Middlesbrough previously and he didn't quite hit the heights that Boro fans were expecting from such a seasoned Championship goalscorer.

"I think next season as part of a striker quartet, he could be a good option and I base that purely on his natural instinct to be in the right places at the right times.

"I'm thinking about the goal that he scored against Luton in the play-off semi-final, brilliant movement from a set-piece, and Boro don't have that, quite simply, we haven't seen that in a while.

"It's a trait of a striker that we really need, the natural ability to poach and that's exactly what Jordan Rhodes does.

"His record at this level is absolutely fantastic and although he hasn't scored as many as he would have probably want this season, he's still a good option to have, as a starting striker, definitely not, but as somebody who can come off the bench and impact games, I wouldn't mind it.

"That's coming from someone who usually doesn't like to see former players return but it is a little bit different with Rhodes because, as I said, he didn't hit the heights that people were expecting, so a sort of sequel to his first spell, there's no real expectations there, I don't think."

The verdict

Rhodes has played more of a deputy role at Huddersfield this season, however, when tasked with making a difference, he has certainly performed.

A proven goalscorer in this division over the years, his physicality and relentlessness makes him a handful for opposing defences to have to deal with.

Should the Terriers win promotion to the Premier League, Rhodes would find himself at risk of dropping down the pecking order.

If that possibility becomes a reality, then Middlesbrough could be a destination he could succeed at, with Rhodes likely to bring qualities that are currently missing from the Boro frontline.
