Midfielder Romaine Sawyers opened the scoring with a low strike from the edge of the area, before Josh Onomah’s header tied up proceedings before half-time.

Villa were poor on the night, with Brentford dominating in trying conditions at Griffin Park.

Glenn Whelan particularly stood out as a liability, with the former Stoke City man’s poor pass/clearance falling straight to Sergi Canos on the edge of the area, who fed the ball to Ryan Woods who in turn teed up Sawyers for the opening goal.
