Ipswich Town are in need of a new manager after Paul Cook was relieved of his duties at the weekend. Unsurprisingly, plenty of names are in the frame at the moment and, among them, is former Chelsea player and Aston Villa coach John Terry. According to Football Insider, the ex-England captain wants to kick off his managerial career in Suffolk but would he be a good appointment? Some of our writers at FLW take a look... Ned Holmes It's an appointment that would not be without its risks. John Terry has got a lot of credit for his work under Dean Smith at Aston Villa and you'd expect we'll see him get a job in management soon but it would be a gamble for the Tractor Boys to appoint him. While he's got coaching experience and, of course, top level pedigree from his time as a player, it would be his first job in senior management. Given the amount of money that Ipswich spent in the summer, you wonder whether this is the right time to take such a gamble. I can see Mark Ashton being attracted to the prospect of hiring a big name but that doesn't necessarily mean it would be the right call. It's high risk but it could bring a big reward. Toby Wilding This may could turn out to be a rather decent appointment for Ipswich in fairness. Admittedly, Terry has never actually held the role of first-team manager at any club, so there would be an element of risk involved in this, were he to get the job. However, the experience he gained during his year coaching at Aston Villa, where he helped them win promotion from the Championship, and then re-establish them in the Premier League, could help him at Portman Road, given he has previously spoken of learning a lot from that spell in the dugout at Villa Park. Indeed, when you add in the leadership abilities Terry showed as a captain in his playing days, you have to feel he is someone who would be capable of directing and commanding the respect of those players in the Ipswich dressing room in the right way. Given the fact that his profile means this would also be an eye-catching appointment, and you do get the feeling that Terry is a candidate who is worth considering at the very least for Ipswich. Jordan Rushworth This would be an interesting appointment for Ipswich Town to make and there is a sense that John Terry does deserve a chance to cut his teeth in management following his work as part of Aston Villa coaching staff under Dean Smith. We have already seen the likes of Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard make their marks on the managerial world and they have proven that they can cut it in that sort of role in different types of jobs. Terry looks to be the next one in line to get a chance and it seems to be a matter of when and where, rather than if he will get a chance. He would arrive with his own set of ideas and as a young manager he would be able to provide plenty of energy and determination for success. The 41-year-old is famed for his legendary leadership skills from his playing days and therefore there is no doubt that he would be able to command the respect of the dressing room. However, Ipswich’s job is a major one and the project might require a little more experience. Having said that, the Tractor Boys went down that approach with Paul Cook and it did not work out, so perhaps a fresh approach is needed.
