Sunderland’s exodus this summer is set to continue, with the high-profile trio of Jack Rodwell, Bryan Oviedo and Lee Cattermole all heading for the exit door this summer.

The Mirror’s live transfer blog (21/06, 18:00) has been taking a look at Sunderland, who are set to offload three of their highest earners this summer ahead of their return to the third tier of English football.

Oviedo and Cattermole will be two players on their way out of the Stadium of Light, whilst the controversial Rodwell is likely to follow.

The 27-year-old made just three senior appearances for Sunderland last season, and has been part of the squad that has suffered back-to-back relegations, leaving Sunderland facing football in the third-tier.

An MLS move appears to be on the cards for Rodwell, according to the Mirror, whilst other big names could also be heading for the exit door.

Lamine Kone, Wahbi Khazri and Didier Ndong are amongst others looking to seal a deal away from Sunderland, who are embarking on their first season in the third tier in over 30 years.

Jack Ross’ side will take on Charlton Athletic on the opening day of the 2018/19 campaign.

The Verdict

It is little surprise that Sunderland are looking to offload some of the club’s top earners this summer, particularly with the club cutting costs ahead of League One campaign.

Rodwell is perhaps the most high-profile name on that list, but not for his footballing ability.

The midfielder isn’t a popular figure at the Stadium of Light, with Sunderland’s supporters sure to be glad to see the back of the ex-England midfielder.
