Former Gillingham player Andy Hessenthaler has returned to the club as assistant manager, the club have confirmed.

Fan favourite Hessenthaler, who made over 300 appearances for the club as a player, returns to the Sky Bet League One side after two previous spells in the top job at the Priestfield Stadium.

The 48-year-old spent last season as a Head Scout for newly-promoted Premier League side Burnley, who finished runners-up to Leicester City in the Championship last season.

But he will now work alongside current Gills manager and former Wycombe Wanderers boss Peter Taylor, having played under him during Gillingham’s promotion-winning season of 1999/2000.
