The south coast rivalry between Portsmouth and Southampton is renewed this week when Pompey face the Saints in the third round of the Carabao Cup at Fratton Park on Tuesday night.

Neither side is in sparkling form coming into the match with Portsmouth in particular on a horrendous run in the league, with only one win in seven and currently down in 20th spot in League One.

So in light of this poor run of form, if Pompey lose to Southampton could it be 'time-up' for Kenny Jackett?

We discuss........

Josh Cole

"He's surely on the brink.

“Whilst Pompey head into their clash with Southampton as clear underdogs, this is a fixture that Jackett needs to win if he is to keep his job at Fratton Park.

“After narrowly missing out on promotion last season, Portsmouth would have been looking to make a positive start to the current campaign in League One.

“However, this hasn’t been the case as Jackett’s side are 13 points behind second-place Coventry City following a dismal few weeks in third-tier.

“With Pompey currently failing to live up to expectations, it would not be at all surprising if a defeat to their arch-rivals results in Jackett’s dismissal.”

Dean Cooke

"It's a situation where I think the manager has lost the dressing room and now the supporters, and that was clear to see in Saturday's fixture against Wycombe.

"That could all change though, if they manage to pull off a victory against their biggest rivals then that's the type of result that can completely change a season.

"It would be a spark that could keep the manager his job but not just that, it would give the fans a memory that they could cling onto for a very long time.

"If they lose, then it has to be the end of the road for the boss, obviously dependant on the performance could depend on when he is sacked, but it's not looking good and I can't see anything other than a Saints win tomorrow."

“You’ve got to start worrying about Jackett’s position after a dismal run of form of late, and a defeat to their bitter rivals will only pile the pressure on even more.

“It has been a disappointing start to the season for Pompey, and they look a million miles off forming a promotion push this term.

“Jackett hasn’t replaced Jamal Lowe and his signings have failed to deliver thus far, and you can’t blame Pompey fans for being somewhat annoyed.

“If they lose heavily to Southampton, he’s bound to be shown the exit door at Fratton Park.”
