West Bromwich Albion supporters have been heaping praise on goalkeeper Sam Johnstone for his performance in the Baggies' 1-0 win at Preston North End on Monday night.

Slaven Bilic's side picked up a fifth successive Championship victory to move back above Leeds United at the top of the Championship table, with West Brom scoring a stoppage time winner though substitute Charlie Austin who converted from the penalty spot after fellow sub Kyle Edwards won a spot kick for the Baggies.

West Brom enjoyed the better of the opening period, with Bilic's side creating a number of decent chances to go into the break ahead, but having gone in level at half time they were reliant on Johnstone to make a couple of vital saves to keep the game goalless heading into the final minutes.

Johnstone is starting to collect clean sheets at an impressive rate, especially away from home with the keeper having now recorded five shut outs in the Baggies' last six matches away from the Hawthorns, a run which has seen him make some excellent saves and show an ability to really command his penalty area to relieve pressure at times.

The 26-year-old came under some scrutiny at times last season, with West Brom finding clean sheets hard to come by and conceding 62 goals in the Championship, but with Bilic getting the Baggies into more of an organised shape he is starting to show real confidence and produce some excellent saves at vital times during matches.

West Brom will now be hoping that they can emulate their recent defensive record away from home at the Hawthorns, and if Johnstone continues to perform as well as he did on Monday against Preston, then they will have every chance of managing to achieve that.
