Aston Villa star winger Jack Grealish would be playing for England if he had made the move to Tottenham Hotspur or another Premier League side, according to former Villa and Spurs boss Tim Sherwood, when speaking to Sky Sports, as reported in the Birmingham Mail.

Grealish has been on fire for Villa this season and has played a major part in the Villans' push for a play-off place, but Sherwood told Sky Sports: “There’s a player there in Jack Grealish who should be playing for England in my opinion,” adding “I’ve said it time and again if he went to a Premier League club or got that move to Tottenham that fell through at the last hour, he’d be playing for England no doubt.”

So is Sherwood right in his views on Grealish?

"I'm not convinced by this.

"Whereas Grealish has remained Villa's main focal point during his time in the Midlands, he certainly wouldn't have got that opportunity at Spurs up against the likes of Kane; Alli; Son and Eriksen.

"Indeed, he may have struggled for game time ahead of that quartet, and then his England chance would have seemed a long way away."

“He’s possibly right.

“He would have to have broken into the side and performed, but not on a regular basis.

“Southgate has shown if you’re at the right club, a handful of appearances is enough.

“If he goes up with Villa, I think he stays put and plays for England.”

Louie Chandler

"He's spot on.

"Southgate has done a decent job in addressing it but the fact remains that if you play for a top-six side your chances of getting in the England team are enhanced significantly.

"I believe Grealish has done enough to warrant a call-up anyway, but playing for Spurs since the summer will have guaranteed that."
