FLW’s Derby County fan pundit Jason Straw believes prospective owner Chris Kirchner deserves some benefit of the doubt.

The deal for the American businessman to take over the club has yet to be finalised, with some stumbling blocks still to be sorted out.

Kirchner has been active on social media discussing the takeover process and answering fan questions.

But this has split some fans on whether this is the best sign of things to come or not.

However, Straw believes that Kirchner has earned some benefit of the doubt for his communication as it has been a serious issue with the club in recent years.

The Derby fan also believes that the 34-year old has been saying the right things to help assuage any fears that supporters may have over his plans for the club.

The transparency throughout the deal was another aspect of Kirchner’s approach that Straw highlighted as a possible positive sign, claiming this is a marked improvement over what fans have been used to lately.

“I think he’s said all the right things,” Straw told Football League World.

“He’s been very vocal on Twitter, some people have liked that some people haven’t.

“He’s been quite transparent with a lot of things. There’s obviously things that he hasn’t said.

“But I think, certainly from a Derby perspective as a fan, when you’ve seen the communication fail for the best part of two years, anybody who comes out and wants to talk about it then you’ve got to see that as a positive thing.

“He’s updated fans every step of the way, so I think what you have to do is give him the benefit of the doubt.

“If he puts his money where his mouth is and the takeover goes through, which looks close, then we have to back him, and we have to see where he can take it.

“I don’t think Derby have got too many offers at the moment, so whilst he’s in the driving seat to take over we have to give him every opportunity to prove what he can do.”

GIORGI KINKLADZE

Derby have had a difficult time in recent years, with financial difficulties causing the team to drop down the Championship table and now down to League One for next season.

Wayne Rooney’s side finished seven points adrift of safety, earning relegation to the third division of English football.

The Verdict

Given how difficult the last couple of years have been, anything will now look to be a step in the right direction for Derby fans.

The sooner that this can be wrapped up the better so that the club can move onto a new era.

Kirchner is currently the frontrunner to take over the club and he has been very vocal on Twitter giving updates to fans.

But it will be if he can keep that kind of communication upon taking over the club that would really help Derby fans feel their future is in safe hands.
