Luton Town are leading the race to sign Sheffield United defender Ben Heneghan this month, according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

Heneghan joined League One side Blackpool over the summer on a temporary basis, and he has made a total of 20 appearances at the centre of defence for Simon Grayson's side this term, but his loan deal is now set to expire later this month.

The 26-year-old's impressive form for the Tangerines has resulted in a host of Championship clubs taking an interest in his services, with Football Insider suggesting this includes the likes of Wigan and Blackburn alongside the Hatters.

However, Nixon has now taken to Twitter to confirm that Graeme Jones' side is leading the chase for Heneghan's services, with Sheffield United set to make the former Motherwell man available for a low transfer fee upon his return to Bramall Lane.

Luton are looking to bolster their defensive unit ahead of their Championship survival bid in the second half of the season, with Jones now desperately seeking reinforcement to help improve his bottom-placed side.

Here, we discuss whether Heneghan would be a good addition for the Hatters...

George Harbey

"I think that Luton definitely need to strengthen their defence and add fresh faces to their squad if they are to survive relegation and secure their Championship status this term.
"Sonny Bradley and Matty Pearson were both solid in League One, but they have both struggle to make the step up and are in need of assistance in my opinion.
"Henegan could be a decent signing for Luton having really impressed on loan at Blackpool, but again, would he be able to cope with the step up having failed to make an impact at Sheffield United?
"There are some very talented strikers at this level, and if Luton are to stay up, they need to find a way of shoring up their defence as conceding 56 goals is just shambolic."
Jacob Potter
“I think this would be a really good addition to the Hatters squad. “It’s no secret that Luton have defensive issues at this moment in time, and they need to be resolved at the earliest of opportunities in this month’s transfer window. “It’s unlikely that they’ll have a sizeable transfer budget, so targeting a player like Ben Heneghan makes sense for the Hatters this month. “He’s really impressed me whilst at Blackpool this season, and has shown that he can cut it at a higher standard than the third tier of English football. “He deserves a fresh start at a new club, as there is absolutely no way that he is good enough to be playing regularly in the Premier League with Sheffield United.”

George Dagless

"He'd bolster Luton nicely.
"Heneghan might not break into the Sheffield United side now but he is a very accomplished player that has good experience in the EFL and has done well on loan spells away from the Premier League side.
"Luton need to add some extra strength down their spine - especially with their away form so poor - and Heneghan would be able to bring that as well as obviously bringing the quality he has got too.
"If Luton do go down as well, he'll be able to help them quickly challenge in League One, whilst he also has the potential to play in the Championship and help the Hatters develop.
"They need to improve their away form and be stouter in defence, this signing could enable that."
