Expectations will once again rise at West Brom once the 2022/23 season gets underway at the end of July.

The Baggies, who had a disappointing campaign last time out, will be hoping to do the necessary business that will allow them to be competitive and challenge for glory.

With lots of links and rumours regarding the Midlands club surfacing, one player who is already at the club and will be eyeing a strong campaign is Daryl Dike.

Assessing Dike's situation at the Hawthorns thus far and what the ambition will be for him next season, Carlton Palmer told Football League World: "Oh yeah for sure. I mean he's proven that at Barnsley.

"He's proven at Barnsley that he can score goals in the Championship.

"Unfortunately, they brought him in at Christmas, or just after Christmas, and he'd been playing in a league that you know, it wouldn't require the fitness that he would require in the league to play in the championship, and unfortunately with that, he picked up a hamstring injury.

"He will have a good preseason under his belt and I expect him to be up there you know (with) 20 goals for the season.

"But what they've got to do, as I said before, you need two or three strikers who are going to get you 20 goals, and you can't just rely on one striker."

The verdict

As Palmer says, it was very unfortunate that Dike was unable to show the division what he could do during the 2021/22 campaign, after what was an excellent stint in the Championship with Barnsley during the 2020/21 campaign.

The physicality, attacking intelligence and knack for scoring goals that he will bring to The Hawthorns is an exciting prospect, with his return bound to feel like a new signing.

A player that will benefit from the arrival of their first recruit of this summer John Swift, there is no reason why Dike cannot hit 20 to 25 goals if he stays fit for the most part of the campaign.

With a full pre-season behind him, Dike could prove to be a big difference as Albion chase down promotion.
