Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa is still looking to strengthen his squad despite an opening day victory in the Championship, with Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle a target late in the transfer window, according to Noel Whelan speaking to Football Insider.

Walthamstow-born Gayle has not featured in any of the Toon's pre-season fixtures and having spent last season out on-loan at West Brom, and a move away from St James' Park could be on the horizon for the forward.

But would Gayle prove to be an adequate Kemar Roofe replacement, if he signed for the Whites?

We discuss........

Ben Lang

"In many ways, this would be the perfect replacement for Kemar Roofe when he completes his move to Anderlecht.

"Gayle's goalscoring record at West Brom last season means he would actually be an upgrade on Roofe, while he also offers pace and versatility which would suit Bielsa's playing style.

"He is a guaranteed 20-goal striker at Championship level, so his arrival at Elland Road would certainly put an end to any attacking concerns Leeds fans may have with Roofe departing.

"I think it could a difficult deal for Leeds to pull off, but Roofe's exit means there should be funds available for striker. The prospect of playing under Bielsa would surely appeal to Gayle, but there is also the risk he opts for a West Brom return instead."

George Harbey

“I think every club in the Championship would want a player like Gayle on their books if they had the chance.

“He is about as prolific as you can get in the second tier, scoring a hatful of goals for both West Brom and Newcastle.

“Leeds need to make a statement of intent with Roofe leaving, and I just don’t think that Inter’s Colidio would be that statement.

“If they can manage to afford Gayle’s wages, then this could definitely be one of the signings of the summer in the Championship for Leeds. He would thrive under Marcelo Bielsa.”

George Dagless

"Absolutely, he's one of the best options they can get.

"Get Gayle signed and their promotion chances increase a great deal, it's a fantastic signing for anyone that can get him.

"He guarantees goals and a shot at going up at this level and, let's be honest, would get into the Leeds first-team.

"Bamford looks ready to put up a fight and that is a good sign but if Gayle comes in I expect him to be straight into the side and Leeds fans will be rightly excited by the prospect."
