Derby County are hoping to complete the signing of free agent Efe Ambrose as Frank Lampard looks for more options at centre-back.

The Rams let Alex Pearce go last month, whilst Curtis Davies suffered a season-ending injury, meaning that Richard Keogh and Fikayo Tomori are the only two senior options at the heart of Derby's defence.

Therefore, Lampard is desperate to bring in a defender and he told Derbyshire Live that they are in advanced talks with Ambrose over a deal.

The ex-Celtic man triggered a clause in his contract with Hibs last month that allowed him to leave on a free and he has been on the lookout for a new club since.

The 30-year-old would arrive at Pride Park with a good pedigree having won titles and playing in the Champions League for Celtic and he also impressed during his time in Edinburgh more recently.

But, will he get in the Derby side?

Our writers take a look...

George Harbey

"I don’t think he’d be a regular starter.

"Tomori and Keogh have been fantastic together this season, and I really can’t see Lampard dropping them anytime soon.

"It seems as if Lampard is signing Ambrose purely for squad depth."

Louie Chandler

"I highly doubt it.

"Just like Ashley Cole, this seems like a really pointless signing and will only serve to disrupt the progression of others in the squad.

"That said, his versatility could well come in handy."

Alfie Burns

"He’s not a starter, but Lampard needed a centre-back and with the transfer window closed, this was one of his only options.

"Ambrose is a player with good experience, so there’s definitely a benefit to bringing him in.

"He will get minutes, but Keogh and Tomori is the way forward."
