Huddersfield Town are in talks with ex-Preston North End and Cardiff City winger Josh Murphy.

A report from Football Insider claims that the Terriers are leading the chase to secure the 27-year-old's signature this summer following his Preston release.

Murphy made just 14 appearances in all competitions last campaign across his time in Lancashire and the Welsh capital.

With that in mind, we asked FLW's Huddersfield Town fan pundit Graeme Rayner for his thoughts on the Terriers being linked with a move for Murphy.

"Josh Murphy - mixed thoughts really." Graeme told FLW.

"My gut instinct is that he's not a good fit in terms of how much football he's played, how effective he has been, the fact he's now I think 27, you know, he's never really had a breakthrough season anywhere at that age and all of that says to me that would probably shouldn't touch him.

"However our recruitment team probably deserve the chance to make that mistake after the brilliant work they did last summer.

"So if it's a genuine link and our recruitment team think he can genuinely do a job, then you know, I have some more faith in them this time this season than I did last year.

"Last season we signed similar sort of signings and eyebrows were raised and then we went on and did so well.

"So, who's to say they might not be right again."

The Verdict

Like our fan pundit I'm sceptical about Josh Murphy's potential arrival at the John Smith's Stadium.

Last season at Cardiff and later Preston was certainly not a good campaign, but perhaps there are reasons to be more optimistic if you look further back.

For example, he does produce goals and assists - whether it be at Cardiff, Norwich, MK Dons, etc.

The problem is those numbers are not huge - touching double figures or close to it, but never exceeding 10 direct goal contributions by many.

As such, I wouldn't hate Murphy as a squad player on the right deal, but Huddersfield certainly should not be looking for him to start.
