New Middlesbrough manager Jonathan Woodgate is looking to strengthen his squad, with former Chelsea right-back Todd Kane a target, according to a report on Football Insider.

Kane, 25, is available on a free having been released by Chelsea after eight years at the Blues, where he failed to make a first-team appearance and spent the bulk of his time out on loan at eight separate clubs.

So would Kane be a good addition to the Boro squad?

We discuss........

Kealan Hughes

"This is a great move by Boro as Kane would tick a lot of boxes for them.

"Kane impressed at Hull last season and his energy should really serve Boro well. He will be a constant attacking outlet on the right but has the pace and awareness to cover defensively too, so is a balanced full-back.

"Boro's squad have lacked players who can attack from deep and that is one of the reasons why they have struggled to score goals in recent years. Kane is a great crosser of the ball too and should provide great service for Assombalonga.

"The fact he can be signed on a free is just the icing on the cake, and it means that Boro will be getting a bargain who should do well for a number of years."

Ned Holmes

“Yes, I think this is a great move from Boro.

“Woodgate is lacking in defensive options, with just four defenders in his senior squad, and Kane could be part of the solution.

“He impressed on loan at Hull City last season and has a fair amount of Championship “experience under his belt, having featured 88 times in the league.

“Chelsea wanted to keep him this summer, which shows the quality of player he is, and at 25 he could be a mainstay in the Boro side for the foreseeable future.

“Additionally, Kane is arriving on a free transfer, which leaves the new Boro boss some more financial flexibility for other moves this summer.”

Jacob Potter

"He’s got a point to prove at his next club, that’s for sure.

"It didn’t come as a surprise to see Chelsea move him on in the summer, as he would have been considerably far down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.

"He has experience of playing in the Championship, having made 39 appearances for Hull last season, and his impressive performances evidently haven’t gone unnoticed.

"Woodgate could be tempted to change his formation to fit Kane into his squad at right-back, and I think it would be a shrewd bit of business if they reached an agreement to sign him.

"He’s still only 25, but has a considerable amount of experience of playing at this level under his belt."
