Queens Park Rangers defender Toni Leistner will be staying at Loftus Road this season, despite being linked with a move away from the club earlier this summer.

The 29-year-old joined QPR last summer and was an important player for the team last season.

However, West London Sport reported earlier this summer that QPR were looking to offload the experienced centre-back during the transfer window, after he had failed to impress new manager Mark Warburton.

Leistner joined QPR on a free transfer last summer, after leaving German second-tier side FC Union Berlin.

The German went on to become a key player for QPR in the Championship last season and was named captain by former boss Steve McClaren.

However, he has struggled to make an impact this season under Warburton, although he did make his first Championship start of the campaign against Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend.

In the latest FLW Six Pointer, we discuss Leistner's situation at QPR in more detail...

Firstly, do you think it was the right decision for QPR to keep hold of Leistner?

"I think it's the right decision. Leistner is a good defender and he's got plenty of experience.

"He did very well for QPR in the Championship last season under Steve McClaren and he could have another important role to play this term.

"Even though he hasn't played that many games this season, his performances in the Championship so far have been good and he's a very useful player for Mark Warburton to have in his squad."

How do you think QPR fans will feel about this?

"I imagine most QPR fans will be pleased that Leistner is staying at the club.

"He's a good player, a no-nonsense defender and his committed performances on the pitch have seen him become a fans' favourite at Loftus Road.

"Given that he was such an important player last season, I think the reports that Leistner could have been leaving QPR this summer would have surprised a lot of fans at Loftus Road.

"I think the majority of QPR fans will be pleased and possibly a little bit relieved that he's staying."

Were you surprised that Leistner was linked with a move away from QPR this summer?

"I was surprised. Leistner only joined QPR last summer and he went on to become an extremely important player for the team in the Championship last season.

"Even though QPR conceded a lot of goals - only the three relegated teams conceded more - Leistner was still solid at the back and I was very impressed with how he adapted to English football.

"It would have made no sense for him to leave the club this summer, in my opinion."

After how he performed last season, are you surprised that Leistner hasn't been involved as much this campaign?

"A little bit yes, given that he was such an important player last season.

"Mark Warburton has come in and like any manager, he's going to have his own ideas about the players and who he wants in the team, which is fair enough, but I thought Leistner would be a good player for him to build his defence around.

"Obviously Yoann Barbet has come in from Brentford - a good defender, with plenty of experience at this level - but I still expected Leistner to start games at the back."

What do you make of Leistner's performances for QPR so far this season?

"I think he's done well so far this season. He's a commanding presence on the pitch and is certainly not afraid to get stuck in.

"He gave away a penalty against Portsmouth in the EFL Cup, but other than that he's been pretty solid at the back.

"I thought he played well against Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend, so it'll be interesting to see if Warburton is prepared to start him again against Luton Town after the international break."

Finally, can you see Leistner getting back into the QPR team?

"I don't see why not. He was such an important player last season and his performances so far this campaign have been good.

"He's adapted very well to English football and will know exactly what to expect this season.

"After remaining at Loftus Road, he will be determined to convince Warburton that he should be starting matches every week.

"I personally think he's good enough to start in the Championship, but it'll be interesting to see if he can convince Warburton the same thing."
