Birmingham City goalkeeper David Stockdale has joined League One Southend United on a seven day rolling contract, after receiving emergency dispensation to add cover as confirmed on Southend's club website.

The 32-year-old who had been a target of Championship leaders Leeds United during the summer as reported by the Birmingham Mail, joins the Shrimpers due to only one of their three squad keepers being available.

So why is it Southend rather than Leeds for the veteran stopper?

We discuss.....

It's just one of those things.

A move from Birmingham didn't materialise but Garry Monk made a rod for his own back and cannot make a u-turn now.

It's a good move for Southend, though, who will be able to use his experience if only for a brief spell.

Gary Hutchinson

He’s fallen foul of the merry-go-round hasn’t he?

I think Birmingham have been a bit unfair given what a stellar performer he was last season but I guess we don’t know the full story.

I bet Southend are loving it, they’ve got a great keeper there, albeit for seven days.

It is an odd tale of a blossoming career.

David Stockdale was on the verge of an England call-up once upon a time if I am not mistaken, and to see him sign on an odd loan deal is perplexing.

Stockdale is better than League One, with all due respect, so I am surprised that no one in the Championship came calling once it was announced he would be able to leave the club.
