West Bromwich Albion manager Slaven Bilic has hailed the impact made by midfielder Romaine Sawyers in the 2-0 win over Stoke City on Monday night.

The Baggies returned to winning ways after being held to two home draws in their previous two matches, with goals from Matty Phillips and Hal Robson-Kanu securing an invaluable win for Bilic's side.

Romaine Sawyers was one of many standout performers for Albion on the night - the playmaker pulled the strings alongside Jake Livermore in midfield, and he almost helped his side score a third goal on the night.

The 28-year-old played a exquisite pass to Phillips who crossed in for Robson-Kanu, but his header could only find the post.

Sawyers has been an everpresent for Albion since arriving from Brentford in the summer, establishing himself as one of the most impressive midfielders in the league this term.

Football League World journalist George Harbey attended Bilic's post-match press conference after the game, where he hailed Sawyers for his performance against the lacklustre performance.

The Baggies boss revealed that his passing and ability to control the game in the middle of the park were two reasons as to why they wanted to bring him "home" in the summer.

He said: "The way he passes the ball, the way he dictates the game. He is a brilliant player. He’s different class. That’s why we wanted him to come home in the summer."

After their victory at the bet365 Stadium, West Brom returned to the top of the Sky Bet Championship table - they face Hull City at the KCOM Stadium this weekend.

The Verdict

Sawyers was absolutely brilliant for West Brom on Monday night, on an evening where they completely dominated from start to finish.

They were so much better than Stoke in every area of the pitch, and you've got to worry about the Potters' chances of staying in the league right now.

He has been an astute signing since arriving at The Hawthorns, and he looks like an absolute bargain.
