Nottingham Forest have been busy bringing in new faces to the City Ground this week, but there could potentially be a high-profile departure on Trentside sooner rather than later.

According to reports from The Sun, newly-promoted Premier League side Sheffield United are holding an interest in versatile midfielder Ben Osborn, as they prepare for life back in the top-flight.

The 24-year-old, who came through the ranks at the Nigel Doughty Academy, has since made over 220 appearances for the Nottinghamshire outfit, and was a regular for the Reds last term.

Here, FLW writer George Harbey discusses this potential transfer deal in today's six-pointer...

Firstly, what is the situation with Osborn?

"By all accounts, Sheffield United are heavily interested in signing Osborn, with BBC Sheffield's Andy Giddings recently confirming that Chris Wilder's side's interest is "genuine".

"The Sun claim that the Blades have tabled a £3million bid for the midfielder, who only has one year remaining on his current deal with the club.

"But, it looks as if Forest won't let their homegrown star leave on the cheap, and it is claimed that the Reds will hold out for £6million if United come calling once more."

Clear to see why the Blades are after him?

"I think signing Osborn would make perfect sense for the Blades.

"They aren't spending over the odds for players since returning to the Premier League, typified after signing Luke Freeman from QPR for a reported fee of only £5million.

"Osborn is a very versatile player, who can play in either central midfield or out wide on the left. If Wilder sticks to his preferred 3-5-2 formation next season, then he could be a perfect option at left wing-back."

Is he worth the £6million Forest are believed to be holding out for?

"I think Forest are well in their rights to demand that price for him, even if he only has one year left on his deal at the City Ground.

"Osborn has established himself as a higher-end Championship player over the last few years, and he is really matured in the Garibaldi.

"He's still only young and has many, many years ahead of him, but £6million does seem like the right price for him."

How should Forest fans feel about this?

"Osborn has really divided opinions amongst the City Ground faithful over the last few years.

"He sometimes lacks end product and talent on the ball, but he more than makes up for it with his work-rate, energy and tenaciousness.

"He gives 110% every game, and finding a player who can play in as many positions as he can at his age is hard to come by, for sure.

"He's criminally underrated in my view."

Can you see him leaving the City Ground for Bramall Lane?

"Osborn has a real close affinity with Forest - he has been there since he was young, and made an instant impact in the first-team when he scored that wondergoal against Derby a few years ago.

"If he were to leave at this stage in his career, it has to be for regular game-time, and can Sheffield United provide him with that?

"It remains to be seen whether he is part of Sabri Lamouchi's plans for next season, but with 12 months left on his contract, it will be interesting to see what happens with Osborn."

Finally, is he ready for the Premier League?

"A number of Premier League sides have been linked with Osborn over the years, with Newcastle United and Burnley the most notable ones.

"He's definitely at a stage now where he deserves the chance to move up to the Premier League, and Sheffield United could be the perfect club for him.

"They aren't likely to do anything spectacular next season, and even if they do come straight back down, he would be a very important player for them back in the Championship."
