Blackburn Rovers are having a successful season under the management of Tony Mowbray.

They currently sit eighth in the league but only three points away from the play-off spots so with three games left to go this season, their race to the top six isn't over yet.

Given they have done well this season, it may be hard to identify just one player to name as the standout this season but we asked FLW's Blackburn Rovers fan pundit Toby Wilding who he would name as his player of the season.

He said: "For me, player of the season I'm going to go for Jan Paul Van Hecke.

"Obviously a bit of a shaky start for him actually after his loan move from Brighton with a few injuries then obviously a red card in that game against Fulham but since then he's been such a model of consistency for Blackburn in the heart of that defence.

"He's been a huge presence in the air, on the floor, just so reliable in terms of keeping opposition attacks at bay.

"Blackburn's defence were the struggles for goals recently is what has really been keeping them in the play-off race to an extent and Van Hecke's been a massive part of that and I think beyond that as well the passion and commitment that he's shown for the club during his time here despite the fact that he is very much only a loanee at this moment in time has just made him a hugely popular figure with the fans as well.

"He does seem to be quite a popular choice for player of the season when you read the comments from a lot of Rovers fans online and that's a very hard selection to argue against when you consider what he's come up with this season and as I say the sort of relationship he has developed with the club during his short time here."

The Verdict:

As Toby says, it's hard to disagree with the vote for Van Hecke to take player of the season this year.

The 21-year-old came in on loan from Brighton at the start of the season and has now made 29 appearances and contributed a goal since being with the club.

He has been a consistent performer in the squad and definitely played his part in getting Blackburn so high up the table.

With their three games remaining, he will no doubt be hoping he can have a part to play to secure his side a top six finish.

Although he's only on loan at the club, he has built a great relationship with the club and its fans and there will likely be a few who will be hoping they can get the man in permanently next season.
